Ten years ago, Barack Obama was the first African-American to be sworn in as President of the United States.

Twenty-five years ago, Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa.  He was the first black head of state and was elected in the first fully democratic election. 

Fifty years ago, a police raid on Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village escalated into riots that sparked the gay rights movement.

Fifty years ago, an American was the first person to walk on the moon.

Fifty years ago, 400,000 people gathered near Woodstock, New York, for a music festival that many regard as the nexus of the counterculture of the time. 

Seventy-five years ago, D-Day was the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe.  It was the largest amphibious landing in military history.

One hundred years ago, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted women the right to vote.

One hundred years ago, the Chamber of Commerce was created in New Braunfels.
