First Meeting of New Braunfels DWCC

The Democratic Women of Comal County has grown significantly in the past 18 months. After many requests for an evening meeting time, a second monthly meeting was added in New Braunfels -- a sister chapter of DWCC. The first meeting was June 18, 2018. Forty-four were in attendance, and most were new to DWCC.

A number of local organizations were represented, including the MLK Association, Riverside Pride, and Black Lives Matter NB. Several candidates were present. The guest speaker was the Honorable Chari Kelly, Democratic candidate for Texas Third District Court of Appeals Place 3.

Remarks from Judge Kelly:

Former US Army paratrooper.

What is 3rd Court? Group of 24 counties, all appeals from lower courts go to District Court. From there a case will go to either TX Supreme Court or Criminal Court.

Such an opportunity for Democratic influence.

Discussed Republican dominance of Texas court systems.

Lack of criminal experience on the higher courts, which she will bring.

Six justices on this court; four are up for election.
